SUMMARY

Iberia in the New World

Works by Morales, Victoria, Guerrero, Padilla, Capillas, Araujo and Salazar

The Spanish and Portuguese arrived in the New World in search of gold and great riches. Although the vast territories of what is now Latin America were conquered by force, the souls of its inhabitants were won over by polyphonic choral works composed first by the great masters of the Iberian Peninsula, then by their disciples who were born in the New World. Eloquent expressions of ardent faith, these works are evidence of the profound musical passion of both the Native Americans and the descendants of the first Europeans.
