Benefit concert in memory of Christopher Jackson

Saint-Léon de Westmount Church
4311, boul. de Maisonneuve Ouest
Metro Atwater
To mark the first anniversary of his death, the musical community of Montreal will honour the memory of Christopher Jackson in a performance of one of his favourite masterpieces, presented by SMAM for the first time in Montreal in 1978: the Vespro della Beata Vergine by Claudio Monteverdi.
For this occasion, singers, instrumentalists and conductor Julian Wachner, a close friend of Christopher’s, will donate their fees to help ensure the continuityof the ensemble that Christopher Jackson co-founded and directed for four decadesand of which he was so proud: the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal.
Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers published in 1610 is one of the pinnacles of Western music, whose iconic status has in no way diminished its seductive appeal. Monteverdi’s masterpiece has lost none of its freshness and vitality: its remarkable structure, variety of textures and atmospheres, thrilling double-choir psalm settings and instrumental brilliance, combined with the sensual beauty of its melodic lines make the Vespers the ultimate artistic experience.
