SUMMARY

The choral repertoire of the Renaissance generally offers four- to six-voice polyphony. However, the great Orlande de Lassus, a life-long musician to the Dukes of Bavaria in Munich, made use of up to twelve voices in a few of his works, most of which were published posthumously by his sons in the Magnum opus musicum. This rich texture allows for sound effects, contradictions, and contrasts that enable the music to fully convey the meaning of the text.
