Generous inspiration, melodic breadth, powerful choirs, and a variety of atmospheres… all of them hallmarks of the Messiah, originally composed for the Easter season but, with time, becoming an essential work for the Christmas holiday. However, this great oratorio by George Frideric Handel, telling of Christ’s time on Earth, did not immediately appeal to London audiences, who were shocked at its presentation in a theatre… But as the composer regularly had it performed as a charity event for the Foundling Hospital, which cared for abandoned children, the English soon ensured its tremendous popularity, which has never since waned.
