SUMMARY

In the late 17th century, musical life in London was enjoying an especially vibrant moment. Theatres were drawing large crowds and music publishers were banking on a new category of musicians: enthusiasts. It was in this context that Henry Playford published The Alamode Musician in 1698, a collection of the most recent arias heard in both the Court and the theatre. Continuing the theme of Nature, which colours our season, the subject matter will notably include the night, the sparrow, and the dove.
