Josquin des Prez composed his last mass, the Missa Pange lingua for four voices, around 1515, at the very end of his life. Admirably constructed around the plainsong associated with a hymn by Thomas Aquinas and featuring beautiful textural contrasts, it exudes an austere grandeur that nonetheless does not exclude the expression of sustained emotion. It will be sung by four male voices, as it was in Josquin’s day. Along with the mass, the concert will include secular songs by Josquin and his student Jean Mouton, as well as some pieces for solo lute.
