MUSICAL PROGRAM
Renaissance and baroque Airs de cour
An intimate genre if there ever was one, the air de cour conformed to a very particular style that developed in France during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It enchanted the French aristocracy, both within the royal entourage and in the microcosm of the salons. The art of Pierre Guédron, Antoine Boësset, and Antoine Moulinié allowed French song to find a path to dramatic and poetic expression, leading to the development of the musical declamation that formed the basis for tragédie lyrique, which Jean-Baptiste Lully would introduce in the 1670s.
