SUMMARY

Open invitation: everyone who has sung with the SMAM is invited to join the choir for the performance of Monteverdi’s Lauda Jerusalem!

To celebrate its 45th anniversary, the SMAM is once again performing a few of the Italian masterpieces with which it firmly established its reputation early on. Some of the most beautiful motets written by Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi will bookend the short but poignant oratorio Jephte, Giacomo Carissimi’s most well-known sacred history. The biblical hero had promised God he would sacrifice the first person he would see upon his return from the war, should he be victorious. But to his greatest misfortune, that person turned out to be his own daughter… The episodes briskly succeed one another, and after the celebration of victory and Jephte’s dismay, the work concludes with his beloved daughter’s sublime lamentation.
